Central Bureau of Statistics

About The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS)

Founded in 1949, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) is Israel's authoritative government agency for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating statistical data. Serving as a critical resource for government, academia, and the private sector, CBS plays a vital role in shaping informed decision-making across the nation.

Challenges

CBS faced significant limitations with their on-premises data infrastructure, which drove them to embark on Project Nimbus—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at modernizing the way census data is accessed and visualized. As the first of its kind - a “once-in-a-decade" type of project, it set the stage for a series of future initiatives designed to gradually transition CBS to the cloud. This comprehensive approach aimed to:

  • Enhance Accessibility: Simplify data access and improve the user experience (UX) for stakeholders. The legacy system was cumbersome, and Project Nimbus sought to make data exploration more intuitive.
  • Boost Visualization Capabilities: Leverage advanced data visualization tools to gain deeper analytical insights, which were previously unattainable due to the system's limitations.
  • Increase Scalability and Agility: Enable rapid deployment of new data-driven solutions by adopting a scalable cloud platform, allowing CBS to better manage growing data volumes and user demands.
  • Ensure Robust Security:
  • Maintain strong security protocols throughout the migration and within the cloud environment, safeguarding sensitive data during the transition.

Solutions

The collaboration between CBS, Commit, and Google Cloud has already delivered substantial benefits, laying the foundation for future cloud initiatives. Key outcomes include:

  • Faster Time-to-Market: CBS has significantly reduced the time required to develop and deploy new data-driven solutions, leading to quicker decision-making and a more agile approach to innovation.
  • Improved User Experience: The CBS website now features an upgraded UX, thanks to Looker Embedded’s intuitive interface, which simplifies data exploration for users.
  • Scalability for the Future: With the cloud's inherent scalability, CBS is better equipped to handle increasing data volumes and evolving user demands.

Project Nimbus is just the beginning of CBS’s cloud transformation. As CBS continues to migrate more services to the cloud, they anticipate unlocking even greater efficiencies and capabilities, positioning themselves as a forward-thinking leader in data management and analysis.

"We extend our appreciation to Edgar and the entire team for leading this project with professionalism, skillfully setting it up, and developing creative solutions under extremely tight timelines. Despite the challenges, the team's calm and composed approach was greatly valued. We look forward to continued collaboration."
